About the Tree Committee

Swampscott has over 3,000 street trees which are under the purview of the Department of Public Works.

The DPW with an annual budget of $7,000 to care for these trees, and limited personnel, sought help from interested town citizens. The Tree Advisory Task Force was formed in 2021 to help with all matters related to the public trees of Swampscott, including the substantial backlog of requested street trees, managing the inventory of trees produced by a contractor in 2016, and other matters. In April 2022, the Select Board voted to create the Swampscott Tree Committee to carry on the work of the Tree Task Force.

The Memorial Arboretum came to our attention while inventorying trees at Town Hall and the accidental revelation of the plaques stored in the Town Hall garage basement.
